Since we started our native planting project in 2016, over 5,000 natives have been planted around the estate, with 9 different species:
Cabbage Tree, Kahikatea, Kฤnuka, Mฤnuka, Kลhลซhลซ, Ribbonwood, Tลtara, Rimu and Kลwhai.
Each of these trees or shrubs of have been chosen particularly to match their ideal sites - with mฤnuka and kฤnuka, pioneer plants, offering stability and erosion control in the clay hills on our southern boundary and behind the chapel. Kลwhai and rimu, the slow growing river bed trees, flourish on the stony soils on our northern terraces.
Each of these natives are still young, but offer us many benefits from attracting native birds by providing shelter and food, to allowing us to understand the terroirs below us more intimately.
Planting Native trees can be incredibly time consuming and with a small team - goes slowly. We've loved implementing community planting days as this has helped us be more efficient while having the amazing opportunity to connect with locals here in Blenheim! We've loved these days these last two years, have met some incredible people and really honed our BBQ skills!ย Till next year....
